BMW

A significant issue arose with employees frequently calling out on the weekends. This widespread absenteeism greatly impacted their workforce, leading to notable shortages and a subsequent decline in production speed and overall capability. As a result, their ability to meet deadlines and maintain optimal operational efficiency was been severely compromised.

In a strategic collaboration with BMW, a novel and innovative Part-Time Program was crafted. This initiative involved employees filling in call-out spots by dedicating their valuable time from Friday to Sunday. Recognizing the importance and value of their contribution, an enticing increased wage package was thoughtfully offered to attract highly motivated applicants to actively participate in the program.

A targeted marketing campaign was launched to attract applicants, resulting in over 250 resumes for only four available positions. Employees were compensated at an hourly rate of $17.70-$22.23, a wage higher than that of full-time workers. Despite the increased wage, the company still achieved cost savings due to reduced vacation time and improved productivity. The program’s success prompted its expansion to include both day and night shifts.

Global Tire Manufacturer

The swing shift schedule that was currently in place, consisting of working during evenings and nights, failed to attract new applicants due to its unappealing nature. Moreover, the retention rate of employees was alarmingly low as the existing staff strongly disliked and struggled with the system, leading to reduced job satisfaction and productivity.

MAU used the expertise gathered at BMW and applied it to the issues at this plant, creating a part-time position to attract new applicants and appease current employees. In this specific program, additional pay incentives were not offered in an effort to better understand the appeal of part-time work.

The positions filled rapidly, despite the lack of pay incentive. It also widened their applicant pool because of the convenient schedule for parents, college students, and commuters. And most importantly, employee turnover was reduced.

Bosch

Due to the high production demand, full-time employees were consistently required to work beyond their regular hours, accumulating excessive overtime. This not only created stress and fatigue among the employees but also led to increased costs for the company, impacting its financial resources.

MAU’s staffing experts created part-time positions to absorb all the overtime hours. They also included a sign-on bonus and a retention bonus to ensure it would be a long-term solution to the plant’s problems. There were two shift options, Friday through Sunday and Monday through Wednesday.

MAU’s marketing team hosted an event where they debuted the part-time positions at Bosch. In just three days, 187 applicants were hired. The burden of overtime costs was lifted, and turnover was reduced significantly. Employees who were unhappy with the demands of the full-time shifts could switch to part-time rather than quit. The Part-Time Program worked so well for production at Bosch that it’s been expanded to other areas of the plant.
