Why do you do what you do?
You may ask yourself that question at various points in your life. As a teenager, when you choose to stay up late the night before a big test and, as a result, can barely stay awake to take it, you may think “Why did I do that??” If you’re a young adult, maybe you spend way too much money on a new car and when that monthly statement comes, you think, “Why did I do that?” And finally, as life continues and you become more introspective you may ask yourself even more about why you made certain decisions earlier in life.
Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Understanding why we do what we do is extremely impactful as we go through life. This is true in both our personal and professional lives. In 2009, Simon Sinek gave a Ted Talk entitled Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Action where he challenged business leaders to not just look at what they produce, build, or what service they offer etc. but to start with why they do that in the first place. The message is equally as important to an individual. Knowing your why inspires vision, purpose and even a clearer picture of what we want to pursue in our families, careers, and overall lives.
