It is well-known that regular physical activity can produce long-term health benefits, but what is physical activity?
According to the World Health Organization, physical activity is “any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure.” So physical activity can include anything from walking and running to lifting weights and participating in sports.
Regular exercise helps prevent chronic diseases – like heart disease, cancer and stroke – control weight and promote strong bone, muscle and joint development. Other positive side effects of regular exercise include improving sleep, decreasing the potential of becoming depressed, relieving stress and increasing self-esteem.
When you neglect becoming active, risks for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, diabetes, cancer and more increase.
However, there is hope! No matter where you are in your life or on your health and wellness journey, it is never too late to get active.
That may be why so many people make “getting healthy” one of their New Year’s Resolutions. However, about 36 percent of people gave up on those goals by February, according to a study done by the Statistics Brain Research Institute. A common reason for this is their goals are hard to stick to because they aren’t clearly defined and are difficult to track. So they lose motivation.
How do we counter this? You need to make a S.M.A.R.T goal.
