May 31, 2017 10:30:00 PM

A staggering 94% of online users cite email as one of their regular activities, according to Pew Internet. It’s a no-brainer for employers to turn to email communication in order to efficiently reach as many qualified candidates as possible. Don’t let bad email manners stop you from landing the job you want with these helpful email etiquette tips!

Your Email Address

Do use a professional email address that contains your first and last name. Using your name in your email address also immediately lets the recruiter know who you are.

Don’t use an address like [email protected], or some other form of a nickname or slang. No matter how qualified you are for the job, seeing an email address like that can change the hiring manager’s mind about you. Instead, register a new professional email address through a free service like Gmail or Yahoo.

Email Messages

Do take your time and read through the entire email. Pay attention to instructions, and click on any of the supplied links before sending a reply back.

Don’t glance through the email and respond without completing any of the directions set by the recruiter. Quick, thoughtless replies can give off the impression that you don’t know how to follow instructions or lack attention to detail.

Spam and Junk Folders

Do check your Spam and Junk folders. Whether you’re waiting to receive an automated confirmation or a response from a recruiter or hiring manager, you should always check these folders to make sure messages haven’t been mistakenly filtered out of your inbox.

Don’t send emails from trusted companies or recruiting contacts to Spam or Junk. You could miss out on great opportunities by automatically sending their messages to a different folder!

Job Boards and Social Media

Do sign up with your professional email address, check the boxes to receive notifications, and routinely check for messages. Just like your regular email inbox, you want to make sure you’re not missing any messages from potential job opportunities!

Don’t use outdated or incorrect contact information. If recruiters don’t hear back from you because a message was sent to the wrong email, they will assume you’re not interested.

Whether you are new to email or you were one of the first to sign up, email will be a key component in your job search. Show your best side to recruiters and hiring managers by staying on top of your inbox and using email best practices.
