Career Tips: What Not to Wear – MAU Edition
January 19, 2015 1:25:00 PM

It’s interview day! You have scoured the internet, completed application after application, and submitted your resume more times than you care to remember.  After all your hard work, you finally landed an interview at the position you’ve been hoping for and you’re almost to the finish line. But before you get there, an important issue must be addressed: what do you plan to wear to that crucial interview? Or rather, what should you absolutely not wear that day?

Many people come in to apply or ask about employement that are inapproriately dressed. There’s something to be said for first impressions and what you wear plays a big part in that initial impression. Here are five things you should try to avoid when choosing that interview and job seeking attire.

  1. Poorly Fitted Clothes – Perhaps you haven’t worn that pair of pants or skirt in a while?  If you find that it doesn’t quite fit the way that it used to, better to leave it in the closet.  If an item is too short, tight or even big you won’t look your best and may even feel uncomfortable, which will show.

  2. Bright and Patterned – With the slight possible exception of creative fields like advertising or computer programming, it’s best to stick with neutral colors such as navy, black or gray. Bright colors and large patterns can be distracting and take away from what you are saying during the interview.

  3. Excessive Accessories (say that six times fast!) – Yes, statement necklaces are on trend and you may like to make a statement with your jewelry, but the job interview isn’t the time to do so. Better to save that big necklace or earrings for girls night out.

  4. Overly Casual Clothing – Jeans, tennis shoes, shorts, t-shirts, hats and baseball caps, flip-flops… You get the message.  Just say no!

  5. Trendy Clothing – Your idea of trendy may not match the interviewer’s impression of fashion.  Err on the side of dressing conservatively for a job interview.  Keep the faux fur and martini tie at home for another time.

Unless you are applying for a job in the fashion industry, clothing may not be your top priority when job hunting.  However, by steering clear of the mentioned attire, making the right choice for your interview should be a a little simpler and help you nail that first impression.

Happy job hunting!
