Starting out the new year with a new career opportunity? Accepting a new job is exciting, especially if you’ve been searching for quite some time. In today’s world, great job opportunities can be hard to come by and once received, are not necessarily permanent. It is important to work hard and show your new employer that they made the right decision in hiring you. Here are five tips to help you have a successful first day – the rest is up to you!
-
Arrive Early. On your first day, wake up earlier then needed to ensure that you arrive at work ahead of schedule. Around 15 minutes early is acceptable. This shows that you’re a dedicated employee who is committed to working hard.
-
Come Prepared. Many times, a new employee will spend a good portion of their first day filling out paperwork. Make sure to bring your driver’s license, social security card, insurance cards, etc. so that you are able to complete all forms without having to say “I don’t know” or “I don’t have that information”. It is always better to be over prepared.
-
Attend Orientation. All new hires should be required, or at least provided the opportunity to attend some type of new hire orientation. This helps you get to know the company you’re working for, as well as who the key decision makers are. If you’re busy, then come early or stay late to make up the time you spend at new hire orientation. It’s that important.
-
Listen First, Speak Second. We all want to hit the ground running in a new position and show others just how capable we are. You must be careful, however, not to overstep your boundaries. Try to listen first, and speak second. Also, if you want to make changes, make sure that you’ve done your homework before asserting your ideas as a new employee.
-
Ask Questions. As a new employee, you are not expected to know everything on day one. Ask questions if you need help. It’s always better to ask questions, rather than keep quiet. If you have a question, chances are someone else has the same one. Asking questions may help you avoid simple mistakes that cost both time and money.
