With Thanksgiving just a few days away, we often begin to have increased feelings of gratitude. Because gratitude is linked to life satisfaction, happiness, optimism, and even hope, it is a powerful emotion. Grateful people have been found to have better moods, feel more support from others, and give more support to others. In addition, grateful people have been shown to less likely experience stress and depression.
Expressing that “attitude of gratitude” for our family, friends, and home comes fairly easy, especially this time of year, but having that same attitude at work isn’t always second nature (except for maybe on Friday). Here are a few reasons to be thankful at work too:
1. Regular Paycheck
Truth is, one big reason most of us show up every day is for the money. We have financial obligations to meet like a mortgage or rent, car payment, child care, as well as everyday living expenses. Simply receiving a regular paycheck ranks high on the list of reasons to be thankful at work.
2. Developing Friendships
In addition to a paycheck, enjoying your colleagues is a key contributor to a positive work experience. The conversations, support and shared interests you develop with co-workers often lead to lifelong friendships.
3. Laughter (sometimes!)
Humorous moments break up the monotony of every day and help you bond with coworkers. It’s good to laugh and have a little fun; the happier you are, the more productive you are.
4. A sense of Accomplishment
A job well done brings satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. Reaching a goal builds confidence and encourages you to set and reach new ones.
5. The Opportunity to Share Your Talents
You are unique! There is no one who is just like you, so celebrate and share that uniqueness to help your employer.
6. Mental Sharpness
Working keeps you mentally stimulated and challenged as you learn new skills and deal people and situations, day in and day out.
7. You are Necessary
Your job exists because there is a need to be taken care of that you fill. The receptionist needs to field phone calls. The accountant needs to make sure the bills are paid. The administrator needs to keep the supplies cabinet stocked. The forklift operator needs to move materials inside the plant. Be thankful for the needs that you meet every day.
Take a minute to think about your workplace. Is gratitude part of your workplace culture? Consider these reasons to be grateful and spread the “attitude of gratitude” at work today!
